The Best Natural Hair Treatments

Over the past few years there's been more and more of a demand for natural hair care products. The eco-product industry has boomed and we now have more options than ever. Clients have been asking often about alternatives to regular hair care product, so I thought it would be helpful to share a few options with you.

1. Baking Soda and Vinegar Rinse Hair Treatment

Certain shampoo brands have come under attack for being filled with harsh and dangerous chemicals. The number one question I get about natural hair care products is in regards to shampoo. Recently a client sent me an article asking about using baking soda and then following with a vinegar rinse to cleanse their hair.
Baking soda won't lather up like shampoo, but it has spectacular cleansing effects, especially when combined with the vinegar rinse. Wet the hair, apply baking soda and scrub it into the hair and scalp. Rinse with vinegar (I like apple cider vinegar) and then finish with a rinse of water. The hair will feel like you haven't used conditioner, but once it's dry, people who have used this method really rave about it.
You'll most likely be asked if a smell lingers from the vinegar - good news, it doesn't! The hair will smell slightly when it is wet, but once it dries, the smell disappears.
Suggest this treatment to your client as a great alternative to using regular shampoo.

2. Coconut Oil and Honey Hair Treatment

Honey and coconut oil can work wonders as a natural moisturizing treatment. Honey acts as a humectant, allowing the hair to hold onto water molecules, and coconut oil acts like a moisturizer and contains lactic acid which aids in the health and strength of the hair's cuticle.
To make this miracle treatment you will need:
  • 3-5 tablespoons of honey depending on your hair length and thickness
  • ½ teaspoon of coconut oil
  • 1 tablespoon of water
  • A small microwave safe bowl
Combine all of the ingredients into the bowl (no need to mix yet) and then heat for 10-15 seconds. The mixture should be fluid enough to mix, but not too hot. Apply the mixture to damp hair in sections, working from roots to ends. Cover with a shower cap and leave on for 15-20. For very damaged hair the treatment can be left on for longer.

3. Lemon Juice and Olive Oil Hair Treatment for Flaky Scalp

Clients are often asking what they can do to battle a flaky scalp. Now they can try this all natural option which fights flakes with olive oil and lemon juice. The acidity in the lemon juice helps rid the scalp of loose, dry skin, and the olive oil moisturizes to prevent further flaking.
Mix two tablespoons of olive oil, two tablespoons of lemon juice, and two tablespoons of water. Massage onto a damp scalp and let sit for up to 25 minutes. Rinse, shampoo the hair, and follow up the treatment every other week until flaking stops.

4. Dairy Products for Dull Hair

Many different factors can make hair look lifeless and dull. Styling products, air pollution and our own natural oils can leave a film on the hair that blocks moisture absorption and shine. Reversing this can be as simple as using dairy products like plain yogurt or sour cream on the hair. The lactic acid in these products gently strips away dirt while you get a moisturizing effect from the milk fat.
Dampen hair and massage in 1/2 cup of plain yogurt or sour cream. Let sit for 20 minutes and then rinse with warm water, followed by a cool water rinse, then shampoo and condition. You can do this treatment every other week to detoxify the hair and maintain shine.

5. Beer for Voluminous Hair

If you're looking to add fullness and volume to the hair, head to the beer isle. The yeast in this unlikely beauty treatment works to plump up lifeless hair. Beer can be used as an all over treatment or even as a styling product.
For a treatment, mix 1/2 cup of flat beer (pour and let it sit out for awhile) with 1 tsp of sunflower or canola oil and a raw egg. Apply to clean, damp hair, let it sit for about 15 minutes and then rinse with cool water.
To use as a styling treatment, pour flat beer into a spray bottle and spritz lightly onto dry hair. Once the hair dries the protein left over from the wheat in the beer will plump up the hair and add strength.

6. Avocado for Frizzy Hair

Avocado has long been known as an all natural moisturizing treatment, popping up in face masks and beauty creams, but have you ever used it on your hair? The natural oils and proteins in the hair make it a killer combo for moisturizing and weighing down frizzy, unruly hair.
Mash up a half or whole avocado (depending on hair length) and mix with 1-2 tbsp of sour cream, egg yolks or mayonnaise. Apply to clean, damp hair and leave on for 15 minutes and rinse with warm water. The treatment can be followed up every two weeks to maintain moisture and battle frizz.
