Dhyana Yoga – What Is it And What Are Its Benefits?

Dhyana yoga is one such type of yoga which involves full concentration. A person has to do a lot of meditation practice to master this type of yoga. According to Hindu mythology, the word ‘Dyana’ is derived from the Sanskrit word ‘Dhyai’ which means ‘to think of’.
Dhyana yoga is one of the 8 limbs of yoga. It is a point where a person who meditates, forgets all that is around him/ her and concentrates on the spiritual aspect. It is the highest point of a person’s devotion towards God. It gives rise to a state of serenity. One of the popular forms of Dhyana yoga is ‘Kundalini Yoga’.
If you want to learn Dhyana yoga, then you are at the right place. Just follow these simple steps and  learn Dhyana yoga at home:
  • Forward bend pose: Here you have to sit on the ground, spread your legs straight in front of the body. Now just fold your legs in such a manner that your right knee is bent on the side and the ball of the right foot is placed inside the upper left thigh.  Bend downwards and try to touch your left foot with your forehead. Hold onto this position for a while. Repeat 3 times. This gives a massage to your back, shoulder and legs.
  • Cobra Pose: In yoga, this is known as ‘Bhujanga asana’. In this pose, you have to position yourself into a curved pose which resembles a snake. Sleep on the ground in such a way that your forehead touches the ground. Now place your palms under your shoulders in a manner that it gets tucked close to your body. Stretch your legs in a way that the top of your feet presses down into the mat. Now inhale and slowly press your hands to stretch your arms, sending your chest upwards. This pose looks like a snake and hence it is called the cobra pose or the snake pose.
This strengthens your back muscles and arms. It increases the flexibility of your spine and  also firms your buttocks.

  • It offers muscular flexibility and thus boosts muscular strength.
  • The most important of all benefits of this yoga is that it increases your energy levels. Every time you do Dhyana yoga, your energy gets doubled.
  • The best part of doing Dhyana yoga is that it activates your brain. The human brain responds actively when you concentrate and meditate.
  • If you practice this yoga regularly, then it can lead to long-term happiness. It gives you a feeling as if you are mentally closer to God.
While doing Dhyana yoga, always remember one thing – controlling your mind is very essential. Your mind has to constantly be alert and it should not get distracted while practicing this yoga. For this, always remember that whenever you close your eyes for doing Dhyana yoga; assume a point in front of you and try to fully concentrate on that point.
Also, while practicing Dhyana yoga, ‘Dhyana Mudra’ is a very important aspect. In simple words, it means ‘hand gestures’. The reason why it is important is that it promotes the energy of meditation. In this mudra, the hands are placed on the lap; right hand is placed on top the left hand. You have to rest the palms facing in the upward direction and stretching it in a relaxed pose.
