How to Do a Pedicure at Home

Believe it or not clean and healthy looking feet are a sign of good hygiene.
Especially in the hot summer days when you wear sandals and your toes are free for the world to see.
But it’s not only about the color on your toenails that attracts attention.
Calluses on the back of your heels, dry, broken skin that looks like perched land in a draught, also tell a story. We haven’t been cared for in a long time, they say, we need hydration! This person won’t be smooth to the touch when you rub against their feet, but rough and sand-paper like. What a turn off.
From a health point of view, having a pedicure at least every two weeks is a must. This is the time to pay attention to the feet. Has anything changed? Did new spots appear? What is the condition of the nails? Any signs of fungus you might have contracted in the gym?
Unfortunately, we only find out how important and functional our feet are, when something goes wrong. Even something small and relatively easy to solve as an ingrown toenail. When this nail hurts, every step, every movement in the shoe reminds you of the existence of your feet, down there, at the furthest point from your eyes.
Sometimes it’s best to use the services of a professional to do the pedicure if you can’t bend or see very well, but generally the pedicure can be done alone, at home, wearing your favorite robe.
Prepare a little station where you will do the pedicure. Choose a comfortable chair, by a bright light source. Gather all the ‘instruments’, and settle down for a relaxing few minutes. You can do it in front of the TV, if that is what you choose.

This is What You Will Need:

  • A tub of warm water, big enough to contain both feet up to the ankles,
  • Bath salts or Dead Sea salts or aromatic oils,
  • Towel
  • Cotton balls or pads,
  • Nail polish remover,
  • Instruments: nail clippers, nail files, scrubbers, buffers etc.,
  • Container for waste,
  • Foot cream or moisturizer,
  • Alcohol pads or Acetone,
  • Nail polish,
It might be wise to create a ‘kit’ containing most of the pedicure stuff. If you plan on doing it regularly, you will not need to think about the list. Just grab the tub, a towel and the kit and you are ready to go.

Pedicure at Home: Step by Step

Put the tub on the floor, mix in the salts/oils, sit down, soak your feet and relax. You are soaking away the dirt of the day, the pollution and the smelly shoes. After about 10 minutes, pat your feet dry.
  • Step 1:
Remove the old nail polish. Use a nail polish remover without Acetone. Acetone will remove your polish quickly but will dry out your nails. Other polish removers do not use Acetone so it might take a bit longer. If you use cotton balls, be aware that you might leave traces of cotton behind. You do not have to be religious about it, you’ll soak your feet again in the water, so there is no need to obsess. It might take a few rubs to get all the nail polish off. Use the container to throw away the used cotton balls, so they won’t color anything else.
Do it one foot at a time, and when you’re done, soak both feet for another few minutes. It’s your chance to exercise the feet a bit by moving them in circle inside the warm water. Towel dry thoroughly.
  • Step 2:
Trim your nails. Use a toenail clipper not scissors. If your big toe’s nail is really tough, start from the outside of the nail toward the center, on both sides.
The nail length should cover the nail bed and not be too long; otherwise they might look like claws. The rule of thumb is: the length of your toe, no more.
Cut the nail across from side to side, not in a rounded shape. You might cut too deep with the clippers, so instead use the file to give it shape and remove ridges. For a soft shape, file the nail in one direction, not back-and-forth, from the outside toward the middle. It is best to use emery board a file and replace it from time to time. The coarser side of the emery board is for shaping, the gentler side is for smoothing the edges.
After prolonged use of nail polish, nails might appear somewhat yellow is shade. Buff lightly the tops of your nails. That will remove the outmost layer and the nails will appear normal again. Soak your feet to remove all the dust.
  • Step 3:
Pat dry your feet and apply cuticle oil. Using a cuticle pusher (that 45 degree angle instrument, sometimes made of wood), push your cuticles back gently around the nail. Use cuticle trimmer to remove excess skin all around the nails. You don’t have to trim every cuticle. If the nail looks good after you’ve pushed it a bit, leave it be.
  • Step 4:
Remove dead skin. Scrub the rough skin on the back of your heels with pumice stone. If your skin is very dry, they say putting half a cup of milk in the tub water helps loosen dead skin. It might take a few times of scrubbing and washing off the get to the required result. Feel around your feet to see if there are any other dead skin patches to smooth out.
When you are done with one foot, apply an exfoliating body or foot scrub all the way to your knee. Massage well and let it sit while you take care of the other foot.
  • Step 5:
Wash off the exfoliating cream and dry your feet well. From now on you will not need the tub anymore and it can be pushed aside. Make sure you dry between the toes as well.
Apply a generous amount of cream on your feet and legs, up to the knee. Rub it in, in slow circular motions. That is the time to ask your partner for a foot massage which will rub the cream in and increase blood flow and circulation.
  • Step 6:
After the cream has been absorbed it’s time to apply the new nail polish. Use alcohol pads to clear your nails from the cream, dry and apply nail polish.
Most professionals recommend using the 4 layer method; a base coat, 2 layers of color and a clear top coat. Wait a few seconds between coats, and wait at least 20 minutes for your nails to dry. Try, if you can, not to wear restrictive shoes immediately.
Now your feet are clean, hydrated and smooth. If after the treatment you find that your feet are still dry and chapped, you can use petroleum jelly or generous amount of cream just before you go do bed. Wear clean cotton socks to protect the bed sheets and do not walk around or you might slip.
The whole process can take between 20 and 30 minutes. The more often you do it, the less time you’d spend doing it because there will be less dead, dry skin to remove.
Now you are ready to show off those lovely toes with those amazing colors, in your new, amazing sandals.

How to Give Yourself a Manicure at Home

A manicure is a treatment for hands and nails, performed at a nail salon or at home. It has a long history, over 5000 years, when henna was used for manicure.
Today it is known that manicure is not just an aesthetic treatment. It helps maintain a healthy balance of oils in and around the nail and prevent problems.
ManicureNails are made of a protein called Keratin. Even though they do not contain nerve cells, the nail bed does, so pulling on a nail to the point of separating it from its bed will result in pain.
The nail bed produces new Keratin and makes the nails grow from the base out. Proper care will ensure that the nails will grow healthy and strong.
Some people say that there is nothing pampering more than getting a manicure and pedicure. Those who love full body massages might disagree, but just as in a massage, you are becoming the passive one. You are receiving the treatment and have nothing to do in return (except paying of course). So feeling pampered and taken care of, is part of the allure of manicure.
But if you don’t have the money or time to submit yourself to weekly manicures, you can always do it at home, by yourself. With a few tools and a little experience, you can have a salon looking manicured hands that you have done by yourself.
Most of the beauty supply stores have professional grade tools. With the price of 2 or 3 salon visits you can buy the tools you’ll need and they will last a long time. Here is a list of tools you’ll need:
  • Nail polish remover: One that does not contain acetone,
  • Cotton balls or pads: The pad will leave less cotton hairs on and around your nails,
  • Nail file: Nail files come in different shapes, forms and are made from different materials. Professional manicurists prefer the disposable emery boards. The metal ones last longer but might lose their effectiveness after a while. Most files are two sided, one rougher than the other. The coarse one should be used for shaping the nail, the other for the finishing touches and to avoid ridges that might catch on clothing. How dense the file depends on the strength of your nails. This is sand paper like substance, so think of your nails as you do of delicate wood. The harder it is, the coarser the file needs to be,
  • Nail buffer: this is a foam block with harder edges to smooth out ridges on top of the nail,
  • Orang stick: is a small stick with an angled edge. Those exist in metal as well and will last longer but they are best handled by professionals. The metal might be too extreme in an inexperienced hand. Those sticks are used to push the cuticle back toward the finger, exposing more of the nail,
  • Cuticle trimmer: very sharp trimmers for cuticles. There are angled ones and straight across. You’ll have to try it before you know which one works best for you,
  • Nail polish: base coat, color, top coat,
  • Nourishing hand lotion,
  • Cuticle cream.

Step-by-Step: How to Give Yourself a Manicure

  1. Wash your hands in soap and water to remove dirt and oils. In nails salons they will have you soak them in water and mild soap for a few minutes. Some have taken to putting glass marbles at the bottom of the bowl to prevent it from tipping and to give the idle hand something to do. Playing with marbles is a good exercise for your fingers.
  2. Remove old nail polish. Don’t skimp on the cotton balls. Do it as many times as needed, especially if you have many layers of old nail polish. Dispose of the used cotton balls in a safe place. They might stain the surface they are put on. Remove all the nail polish. If there is some left between the ridges of the nail, use the buffer to buff it out. Soak or wash your hands again to remove dust. Some say that soaking your nails in lemon juice will remove all the old traces.
  3. Shape your nails. Square and oval shapes are the most popular now. Use the rough side of the nail file to give it a shape. File in one direction only from the side of the finger to the middle, not back and forth. Smooth out the shape with the more delicate side. Buff the nails again.
  4. Exfoliate. This is a good time to use an exfoliating body or face cream on your hands. Rub them together for a few minutes, making sure your give extra attention to the rough patches on your hands. Wash it off with warm water, or soak in a bowl.
  5. Cuticles. Dry your hand well, apply cuticle cream or oil on the cuticles and gently push them toward your finger, away from the growing nail. You do not need to cut your cuticles if they are in perfect shape. If there are ridges, ‘left overs’ and such, nip it with the cuticle trimmer.
  6. Nourish your hands. Apply a generous amount of hand cream and massage it in. Don’t be alarmed if it takes a few minutes for all the cream to be gone. Continue rubbing the hands, giving yourself an invigorating massage.
Beauty Trick: It is a nice trick, at this stage of the manicure to dampen a towel and put it in the microwave for 30 seconds to a minute. Wrap your hand in the warm towel for two minutes to let all the cream absorb into your skin. Dry off your hands and use nail polish remover the remove the oils from your nails.
  7. Apply new polish. First comes one layer of the base coat. One stroke in the middle of the nails and a few pulls, down the sides, should do. Base coat usually dries pretty fast. Apple a coat of your favorite color, starting with the pinky finger to the thumb. Let it dry for a minute or two and apply a second coat of color. After 10 minutes, apply the top coat. That will ensure that each coat has time to harden, even a bit, before the next coat came up.
  8. Even the most skilled manicurist has some mishaps. Wait for your nails to dry before wrapping the edge of the orange stick with some cotton and dipping it in the nail polish remover. Clean gently and try to avoid touching any other part of the nail.

    Maintaining Manicured Hands

  1. Your manicure should last well for 7 to 10 days. If the color chips, you can fix it with a color layer and the top coat.
  2. Apply hand cream every night before going to bed.
  3. Wear gloves when dealing with harsh chemicals or submerging your hands in water for prolong periods of time.
  4. Do not use your nail as tools or a tooth pick.
  5. Avoid putting your hands in your mouth.
Repeat every 7-10 days to have continuously beautiful, well taken care of, hands. Once you get the hang of it, it will not take you long to do the process. Your nails will not grow that much in a week, so only a minute filing will be required.

Fresh Nail Trends You Can Do Yourself at Home

Caviar ManicureNail trends come and go as with every other element of fashion, and it can be a hassle going to the salon just to stay up on the latest trends. But what’s nice is that you can avoid this hassle and save some money in the process by doing the latest nail trends at home. From neutrals to neons, here are all the ways you can play up your nails this summer – and for every summer to come!

Nice and Neutral

In other words: this is how to look classy, chic, and sport a simple trend that is both timeless and easy to achieve. Keep your nails at a comfortable length – but not too long – to keep the elegance and class still intact. Be sure to use an emery board to file each nail into a flattering shape; a nice tip for finding a flattering shape is to follow the shape of your cuticle. With a neutral nail polish of choice, paint your nails and finish up by using a clear top coat to make the finished look last.
Choose buttery shades of beige, gray, white, and pale pink to make a neutral statement. The most important thing to remember when wearing a neutral nail color is to keep the colors fresh and well-groomed; this means no chips or scuffs!

Creating Caviar Manicures

Take neutral nails up a notch with a caviar manicure. Caviar nails are perfect for a girls’ night out, special events, or just because you’re feeling fabulous. Caviar manicures don’t have to be made with neutral colors; any color will do as long as you’re using clear micro beads. To create the sophisticated caviar manicure trend at home you’ll need the following:
  • Base coat
  • Opaque or matte nail polish
  • Clear micro beads (find them at craft stores)
  • Top coat
  • A tray or a piece of paper
Use our guide for maintaining healthy nails to prep your nails perfectly before beginning the caviar manicure – or any other manicure for that matter!
  1. The first step is to apply the base coat to clean nails and allow it to dry. Next, you will apply one coat of the non-shimmer nail polish and allow it to dry.
  2. The second step is to apply another coat of the nail polish to one hand and wait until the polish is tacky (about 10-15 seconds). Holding your hand with the semi-dry nails over the tray, bowl, or piece of paper, pour the clear micro beads over your nails making sure to cover each nail entirely with the beads.
  3. Once they are covered with “caviar,” use your fingers to gently press the beads to make sure they stay in place.
Repeat the process on your other hand and with the fallout of beads on your tray, you can pour them back into their container until you’re ready to use them again! This manicure will last up to 4 days before the beads start to depart from your nail bed.

Nail Stickers that Save Money

Getting straight and tidy lines on your nails can be really troublesome if you’re not using the right tools for the job. So here is the solution for those wondering how to get the perfect striped manicure from home or wanting to create cute geometric shapes on nails without buying expensive stencils or paying to get them done. When reading the following list of tools, keep in mind that scotch tape isn’t just for holding up posters on your wall:
  • Scissors
  • Scotch tape
  • Nail polish
A good reason to keep scotch tape tucked away with your nail polish is so that you can create cute triangles, zig-zags, and stripes on your nails without all of the shaky hands and messy lines!
Roll out an inch of scotch tape and paint it with your nail polish. Take a shower, do your hair, apply makeup or eat a sandwich – just be sure to let the polish dry before moving on to the next step!
Paint your nails with a different color than you painted the tape, then cut the tape into shapes or strips. Next, create personal and unique designs with your homemade nail stickers by applying them to your nail with the sticky side down. Apply a topcoat to finish the look and make the manicure last!

Color Splash Nail Manicure

Color splashed nails are a hot trend for summer, and it’s a great look to wear to the beach, pool, pond, or walking around the mall. It is really easy and can be done with any combination of colors you have available – assuming they all complement one another. If you want colorful nails that give you instant style you’ll need the following:
  • White nail polish
  • 3 coordinating nail polishes (teal and coral are a couple of great options!)
  • 3 toothpicks
  • Tray, bowl, or a piece of paper
1. File your nails and clean up your cuticles before painting the nails white. Using a good, quality white nail polish is crucial because a lot of white polishes don’t dry well and require a few coats. Make sure the white nail polish is dry before moving forward.
2. Choose the first color, open the bottle, and use the brush to dab the color onto a tray, piece of paper, or in a bowl. Use your toothpick to pick up some color, then place the colored tip of the toothpick at the upper corner of your finger nail and drag the color to the opposite lower corner of your nail; you’ll probably run out of color before reaching the other corner which is completely fine!
3. Apply as much color as you desire to each nail and let it dry before using your second color – repeating the same process, only using a clean toothpick to apply the new color. Let the nail polish dry before doing the same thing with your last nail color. After your nails have dried, apply a top coat to make sure your style lasts!

The Gradient Stained

This DIY manicure has been popping up everywhere! It’s another great manicure to wear at the beach, pool, parties or day trips to the mall, and it only takes a small part of your day to complete.
Ombre and gradient styles are everywhere from hair to clothing so why not stain your nails too! Here are all of the ingredients for this manicure:
  • 3-4 nail colors from the same color family (example: dark blue, light blue, pale blue/white)
  • Top coat
  • Triangle makeup sponge
  • Cup of water
  • Paint brush
  • Polish remover
  • Piece of paper
It may take a few times of doing this technique to get the hang of things, but it’s honestly super easy! Instead of simply using nail polish to paint your nails, you’ll be staining them.
1. The first step is to remove the caps of all 3 nail polishes.
2. Soak the triangle makeup sponge in the water for a couple of seconds and squeeze the water out so that it is only damp. Having a damp sponge will keep the polish from being absorbed heavily into the sponge.
3. Now that your sponge is damp, you’ll need to move slightly fast to keep the nail polish from drying out on the sponge. Begin with the darkest color and draw a line on your sponge near the edge; going over the line twice will be enough for the color to transfer to your nail.
4. The next step is to paint another line with the second shade, continuing to do this with the lightest shade as well.
5. Now you’re ready to dab the sponge onto your nail. It seems intimidating to dab the colors, but fear not! Don’t worry about messing the technique up because dabbing the sponge is what blends the colors together to give it the gradient look. If you’re still unsure, you can dab the sponge on a piece of paper before trying it on your nails. Align the dip of the sponge up with the tip of your finger or toenail. Once the sponge is in place, press the sponge to your nail, and then dab it a few times up and down in the same spot.
You should be able to do 2 nails before needing to reapply the colors to your sponge as long as you’re moving fast. The whole process can get messy, which is why you need the paint brush and fingernail polish remover. Wipe up the mess around your nails and cuticles with the brush before applying a top coat to your nails. Do this manicure in any color you like and mix up the colors if you’re feeling confident.
