6 Facts Our Colorists Wish You Knew

Did you know eSalon’s individualized hair color is the handiwork of our professional colorist team? To ensure you love your locks, they wanted to pass on some advice about your next hair color order:

1. “Read your instructions carefully.”eSalon’s application instructions are personalized to your hair, so they may look different from drugstore products.
“Your instructions may change between applications, so read each step,” says senior colorist Dina. “Your first order may be an allover application, and subsequent orders might be roots only. But if you apply color to your ends when you’re not supposed to, they may turn out darker than the roots!”
Adds colorist Megan: “Reading your instructions first can help avoid issues later on.”
2. “Color doesn’t remove color.” Our colorists often say this – but what does it mean? If you have dark hair and want to make it lighter, you can’t just apply a light color over it. You’ll need to use a strong lightening product, usually containing bleach, to remove the underlying pigment before applying a lighter shade over. This leads us to the next point…
3. Dark hair going lighter: “If you have dark hair, we won’t be able to make it dramatically lighter,” says Dina. “This color change requires stronger products that we don’t offer for home use. We feel it’s better to have this process done by a professional in a salon.”
“This applies for highlights too,” adds colorist Danielle. “Highlights are usually achieved with products like bleach, so eSalon cannot match your highlight color. Instead, we recommend using our color for the base, then visiting a salon for highlights after.”
4. “Beware of brassy factors.” Many clients are worried about warm, brassy tones in their hair. But certain choices naturally cause these tones. “Warm colors such as gold and copper can naturally contribute to brassiness,” advises Danielle. She adds: “Also, lightening hair can make it appear warmer.”
5. Target gray hair. “Stubborn grays are a common issue,” says our Color Director Estelle. “Try this: Start your application where the gray is most resistant, often at the hairline. This gives it more time to process the color for better coverage.” If you still see grays, call us and we’ll reformulate to improve your coverage.
6. “Our ears are open!” Don’t forget to leave feedback to help us out formulating your next order. Our colorists are always happy to work with you personally to tweak your color so it’s perfect!
